How to be a Gentleman (of Chivalry)

Contrary to popular belief, the age of the gentleman is not over (it never really was). The times may have changed and it is unlikely that a lot of men with noble ancestry still walk among us but the modern gentleman does exist.

So here are a few rules that the modern gentleman should strive to live by (or at the very least, encourage a step in the right direction)

Mind your manners

Three things define a gentleman: chivalry, courtesy and honour. Be the guy who opens the door for his lady, who says please and thank you, who treats everyone with courtesy and doesn't need threats or curse words to get his point across.

Cultivate a sense of curiosity

A curious mind is open to learning new things and developing new interests. Question the status quo, follow the road less travelled and give people a chance to share their experiences. Don't be afraid to be the square peg in a round hole.

Confidence... Don't leave the house without it

A gentleman is confident in himself, his abilities and his purpose. It is a part of him, like a second skin and nothing can shake it.

Indulge your passion and hobbies

Whether it's extreme sports, dabbling in the arts or becoming a whiskey connoisseur, every gentleman needs to discover where his passions lie and explore them.

Make time for those who matter

There is nothing 'weak' about feelings and making those feelings known. Make time to visit family, forget about the 3 day rule and call that girl you like, and darn it, if that movie pulls on your heartstrings, it's okay to shed a manly tear or two.

Look good all day, every day

A gentleman knows the importance of first impressions and he makes good on it. Whether it's an interview, relaxed Sunday at the golf club, a dinner with a gorgeous woman or a barbeque, a gentleman dresses and looks the part. First impressions aside, he never slacks on his grooming or appearance, it is a part of who he is.

5 Things Every Gentleman Should Own

Things don't define who you are but some things do come in handy in pulling together a gentleman's demeanor.

A Bespoke Suit

The suit that gets you the job, the girl or both! Every gentleman needs to own a bespoke suit which is tailored according to his physique and brings out his best features.

Good Watch

Take your time (pun intended) and invest in a good watch. A classy watch immediately uplifts your look and acts as a statement piece for the modern gentleman.

Grooming Kit

Because rugged nails, an unkempt beard and ashy skin are never 'in'. A gentleman needs to take care of his body, which means moisturizing, trimming your nails, using a great smelling cologne or deodorant and have your barber on speed dial when the need arises.

Whisky Bar Set

When a gentleman entertains, he needs to have the right tools. Invest in proper whisky glasses and an ice bucket, at the very least.

Designer Shoes

Own at least one pair of designer shoes that complement your style and are versatile enough to be worn for a variety of occasions and with a variety of outfits.
